This shifts the decision-making from the human to the technology. The question is no longer how do we reach the customer, but how do we reach the customer’s agent?

Since autumn 2025, the pace of development has accelerated significantly. OpenAI and Stripe launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) in September 2025, a framework for how AI agents can execute transactions in a standardised way. In January 2026, Google launched its Agent Payments Protocol. Shopify has its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), covering the full purchase journey from product discovery to returns. Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), originally a developer tool, is now being used as a commerce data layer for product information and catalogue access.
What were future scenarios in November 2025 are now live infrastructure. The protocols exist. The question is whether your product data and systems are ready to use them.
Product data must be clear, structured and machine-readable. Otherwise you risk not being visible when an agent is choosing or recommending a product. This includes everything from product names and attributes to stock status and pricing logic.
Agents will not click through a traditional checkout. Autonomous flows and direct purchases require simple, secure and API-driven payment solutions.
You are no longer communicating only with customers, but also with their digital advisors. This places new demands on accuracy in information, transparency, trustworthiness and technical accessibility.

And ensure your platform can expose product information and pricing logic to external AI services. That is the foundation for being visible and sellable when AI agents begin to play a larger role in purchase journeys.
The protocols are in place and the major players in AI and payments are pushing forward actively. In the Nordics we are in an early phase, but companies that prepare their product data and platforms now will have a clear advantage when agentic commerce reaches mainstream adoption, which is likely during 2027.
